Finding Strength in Seasons of Light and Darkness

We all experience seasons of peace where everything seems to flow effortlessly and times of intense trial when doubts and fears creep in. In moments of peace, it’s easy to feel invincible, confident in our abilities and decisions. But the true test of our character often emerges in times of struggle, when the world feels like it’s closing in and the warmth of clarity and certainty is momentarily withdrawn. The words, “He who is too sure in time of peace, will often show himself to be downcast or fearful in time of war,” resonate deeply with me. They remind us that if we rely too heavily on our strength in good times, we may falter when challenges arise. This has been a lesson I’ve returned to time and again. During times of peace, it’s natural to feel secure, perhaps even a bit too self-assured. But when trials come, it becomes clear how essential it is to cultivate a spirit of humility, remaining grounded and modest, even when life seems easy. I’ve learned that a humble heart is...

Thou Hast Caesar and His Fortune with Thee

In ancient times, to have Caesar with you meant to have power, protection, and fortune on your side. For me, my Caesar is my God—my unwavering source of strength, guidance, and blessing. Just as Caesar represented a formidable ally in the Roman world, God represents an even greater ally in my life, especially during times of struggle and uncertainty.

A Guiding Force in Challenging Times

Throughout my journey as a homeschooling mom of five, living with limited resources and facing numerous challenges, I've often felt the weight of financial instability and the overwhelming demands of daily life. My husband, the sole breadwinner, and I have experienced the burden of debt. But even in these moments of hardship, I have felt the presence of my "Caesar," my God, guiding and supporting us.

One particular experience stands out. When I attempted to start a small printing business, I quickly felt overwhelmed by the demands and pressures. I doubted my ability to satisfy customers and manage the business alongside homeschooling my children. It was a tough decision to step back, but in that moment, I felt a gentle reminder that I was not alone. God was with me, offering comfort and assurance that my worth was not tied to the success of a business venture but in my faithfulness and dedication to my family.

Embracing God's Fortune

Having God as my "Caesar" means embracing His fortune—not in material wealth but in the countless blessings and grace He bestows. It means recognizing the beauty in the small victories and the lessons learned in setbacks. Just as Caesar brought stability and protection to his people, God brings peace and security to my life, even when the future seems uncertain.

For example, when we discovered the Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling this year, it was a moment of clarity and gratitude. As newcomers to this approach, we're still exploring and learning how to implement it effectively in our daily routine. This journey has brought a refreshing structure and joy to our homeschooling, making learning more engaging and meaningful for my children. It's a reminder that God's fortune often comes through unexpected blessings and resources, guiding us along new paths. With the focus on short, focused lessons and the use of living books and nature studies, we are witnessing our children develop a deeper love for learning and faith, even as we navigate the nuances of this new educational philosophy.

Encouragement for Fellow Travelers

To all who read this, remember that having God as your Caesar means you are never alone. His fortune is with you, offering strength and guidance through every challenge. Whether you're facing financial struggles, personal doubts, or the everyday demands of life, know that God is your ally, your protector, and your source of hope.

In our homeschooling journey, I've learned the importance of relying on God, not just for the big decisions but for the daily moments of patience, creativity, and love. By embracing His presence and trusting in His plan, we find the courage to face each day with faith and optimism.

So, take heart and find encouragement in the knowledge that you have "Caesar and his fortune with thee." In the presence of God, you have all the support and blessings you need to navigate life's journey. Remember, even when you feel overwhelmed or uncertain, God is with you, guiding your steps and providing for your needs. Let's walk this path together, with faith in our hearts and the assurance that we are never alone.
