Our journey through financial hardship has been a rollercoaster. Recent medical emergencies piled on top of our existing expenses, leaving us struggling with significant debt. Despite our best efforts, the road to financial stability feels long. But amidst these challenges, I've found unexpected lessons – blessings in disguise, perhaps. These are lessons God might be using to strengthen our family.

This hardship has led to the discovery of 14 valuable takeaways that have strengthened my faith, brought our family closer, and equipped us to handle the future with more confidence.

1. Trust in Divine Providence:

When finances are tight, it's easy to feel anxious about the future. During these times, God invites us to trust in His provision. Just as He cares for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, He will also take care of our needs. I remember a time when we were down to our last few peso, not knowing how we'd pay the bills. Miraculously, a freelance job for my husband came through just in time, reinforcing my trust in God's timing and provision.

2. Humility:

Financial struggles can humble us by revealing our limitations. This humility can open our hearts to seek help from God and others, recognizing that we cannot do everything on our own. When we first faced financial difficulties, I was hesitant to ask for help. But reaching out to friends and family not only eased our burden but also deepened our relationships and taught me the importance of community.

3. Stewardship:

God calls us to be wise stewards of the resources we have. Financial difficulties can teach us the importance of managing our money wisely and making thoughtful, informed decisions. I once attended a financial literacy workshop, which transformed my approach to budgeting and saving. We learned about practical budgeting tools and strategies to prioritize essential expenses. It was a game-changer in how we managed our finances going forward.

4. Patience:

Financial burdens rarely vanish overnight. This period of overcoming debt has become a masterclass in patience. It's about understanding that progress takes time, and significant improvement is built on consistent effort. While we're still on this journey, I've learned the immense value of slow and steady steps. Each milestone, whether it's paying off a credit card or reducing our monthly payments, brings us closer to financial stability. These small victories solidify the importance of both perseverance and trusting in God's timing.

5. Contentment:

In a world that often equates success with material wealth, financial hardship can help us learn to find contentment with what we have. It teaches us that true fulfillment comes from our relationship with God and not from our possessions. During our financial struggles, we found joy in simple pleasures like spending time together as a family and appreciating nature's beauty. These moments brought us a sense of contentment that money never could.

6. Gratitude:

Even in the midst of financial strain, there are always things to be grateful for. Recognizing and expressing gratitude for the blessings we do have helps shift our focus from what we lack to what we have. I started a gratitude journal where I wrote down three things I was thankful for each day. This practice helped me stay positive and reminded me of God's ongoing blessings in our lives, from the health of our family to the love of our friends.

7. Generosity:

True generosity blossoms not from abundance, but from a heart overflowing with faith even in times of scarcity. God encourages us to find ways to give, even during hardship, for it can deepen our trust in His provision.

This became a powerful truth in our lives. Despite our financial struggles, we continued to support our church, believing that every contribution, big or small, is a testament to our faith and a blessing for others. This act of giving wasn't just outward; it served as a powerful reminder of the abundant love and support surrounding us, strengthening our faith in God's goodness.

8. Faithfulness:

Maintaining faithfulness to God and our spiritual practices, even when times are tough, strengthens our relationship with Him. It shows our trust and commitment to His plan for our lives.  Despite our most challenging times, our faith remained a constant source of strength. We held fast to our daily devotions, like praying the Holy Rosary, and consistently prioritized attending daily Holy Mass whenever possible. This routine kept us grounded and connected to God, providing the strength we needed to persevere.

9. Perseverance:

Financial difficulties build resilience and perseverance. By facing and overcoming obstacles, we develop a strength of character that prepares us for future challenges. There were moments we wanted to give up, but we kept pushing forward, knowing that God was with us. Each small victory, like paying off a credit card, was a testament to the perseverance He was cultivating in us.

10. Seeking Wisdom:

God promises to give wisdom to those who ask. Facing financial difficulties can drive us to seek divine wisdom for making better financial decisions and for navigating our challenges. We prayed daily for wisdom and sought advice from experienced friends within our homeschooling community. Their guidance, coupled with God's wisdom, helped us make smarter choices and avoid further pitfalls, like unnecessary debt.

11. Community Support:

God often uses our communities to support us in times of need. Financial hardships can teach us the value of leaning on family, friends, and church for encouragement and assistance. Our homeschooling community was a lifeline, offering emotional support, and sometimes even monetary help. This experience deepened our appreciation for the power of a supportive community and the importance of giving back when times get better.

12. Repentance and Forgiveness:

Acknowledging mistakes and seeking forgiveness is a vital part of spiritual growth. Financial difficulties can be a time to reflect on past errors, repent, and also forgive ourselves and others. We had to forgive ourselves for past financial mistakes, like impulse purchases, and seek God's forgiveness for any mismanagement of resources. This act of repentance brought us peace and allowed us to move forward with a clean slate, focusing on better financial decisions in the future.

13. Hope:

Even in the darkest times, God encourages us to hold onto hope. Believing in a brighter future and trusting in God's promises can provide the strength to keep moving forward. We held onto the hope that God had a plan for our lives, even when we couldn't see it. This hope was a light that guided us through the darkest moments of our financial struggles, reminding us that God is always faithful.

14. Learning and Growth:

Every challenge presents an opportunity to learn and grow. Financial difficulties, for instance, can teach us valuable lessons about money management and personal growth, which can help prevent future problems. We've taken this time to educate ourselves on financial management through books, courses, and budgeting apps. This learning, I know, will not only help us get out of debt but also equips us to handle our finances better in the future, allowing us to build a financial safety net.

Conclusion:

While financial hardship can feel like a storm cloud overhead, it can also be a time of profound personal and spiritual development. By embracing these lessons, we can grow closer to God, emerge from our struggles stronger and wiser, and build a more secure financial future for our family. Remember, God is with you in every step, providing guidance, support, and hope. Trust in His plan and take each lesson to heart, knowing that better days are ahead. Your journey through financial hardship can be a powerful testament to God's faithfulness and your resilience. Stay hopeful, stay faithful, and know that you are never alone.
