Having a Humble Opinion about Yourself
We all want to learn and be knowledgeable, but what’s the use of being smart if we don't have a deep respect and love for God? A humble farmer who serves God with love and sincerity is far better off than a proud scholar who spends his time studying the stars but forgets about his own heart. When we truly understand ourselves, we see our own faults and weaknesses, and no amount of praise from others changes how we feel about ourselves. If we knew everything in the world but didn’t have love, it would mean nothing to God, who cares more about how we live our lives.
Sometimes, we crave knowledge too much. This can cause confusion and lead us away from what really matters. Many smart people want to show off their wisdom and be recognized as wise by others. But knowing a lot of things that don’t help our soul is useless. Talking endlessly and reading countless books won’t satisfy our hearts. Only living a good, honest life brings peace to our minds, and a clean conscience gives us confidence in God. The more we know, the more God expects us to use that knowledge to do good.
So, let’s not be proud of what we know. Instead, we should respect the knowledge we have as a gift from God. Even if we think we know a lot, we must remember that there is much more we don’t know. We should not think we are better than others just because we know more about something. Many people are wiser and closer to God than we are. If we want to learn something truly useful, we should try to see ourselves as God sees us, not as we see ourselves through the lens of pride.
The most important lesson we can learn is to know ourselves honestly: to admit our weaknesses and faults and to have a humble opinion of ourselves because of them. It is wise to think highly of others and not to dwell too much on our own strengths. If we see someone else making a mistake or committing a sin, we shouldn’t feel superior. We don’t know how long we will remain good and free from sin. We are all weak and fragile, but we should always remember that we ourselves are the weakest of all.
True humility is knowing that we are all capable of falling and that we need God’s grace to stay on the right path. By recognizing this, we can live with a gentle heart, treating others kindly and lifting them up, instead of putting them down. This way, we follow the example of Christ, who was humble and loving, even though He was the greatest of all. Let us strive to learn and grow, but always with humility, remembering that the most valuable knowledge is knowing our own hearts and relying on God to guide us.
